What is Shirodhara?
Shiro..head. Dhara..flow. Shirodhara, is an ancient practice in Ayurveda — the gentle pouring of liquids on the head. The liquid can be medicated milk, coconut milk, buttermilk, water, but most frequently warm herbalized oil.
This soothing Ayurvedic therapy is known to put one in a deep relaxation state, calm the nervous system and awaken the ‘third eye’. It is also known to help with removing ‘ama’ or toxins from the body and stimulate the pituitary and pineal gland.
The experience of Shirodhara is an easily enjoyed and well loved one that most folks find very rewarding. The relaxation of lying on your back and letting the warms oils soothe your forehead, hair and scalp is only half the journey. The treatment is known to bring one into a higher state of consciousness and heightened awareness. The powerful chakra stimulation is added benefit.
The procedure is said to organize alpha brain waves, help in purification of blood, improve mental clairty and release deeply trapped toxins ‘and’ fears. It is said to awaken intuition and inner wisdo. A long lasting sensation of peace is an added benefit.
The soothing and fragrant oils are usually carefully selected by the ayurveda personnel to suite your body type. The oils are chosen so as to provide your body what it needs to bring it to its healthiest balance. Eg. Sesame oils may be good for a Vata body, where as coconut oil may be chosen for high Pitta.
